Decide where simple materials are acceptable and where reliability, safety and service support justify higher spending.

A budget build is not automatically unsafe, and a premium build is not automatically well designed. The meaningful difference is whether money is spent on durable systems, verified components and maintainable installation rather than cosmetic complexity.

Mechanical condition, tires, brakes, corrosion and weight capacity belong outside the décor budget. They should be evaluated before the conversion scope is allowed to grow.

On the thesis prediction: electrical is confirmed by multiple sources as one of the largest and widest-ranging line items, with one source explicitly stating it commonly runs 25–30% of total non-bus build spend, and the roof raise is confirmed as carrying enormous cost variance depending on DIY versus professional execution. Cabinetry, however, is less clearly documented as a top-tier cost driver in the sources reviewed — it appears folded into general "wood" or "materials" costs in most builder accounts rather than isolated as its own line item, so the original expectation that cabinetry ranks among the top three cost centres is only partially supported by the available sourcing; mechanical/maintenance costs after the build appear at least as consequential as cabinetry in the sources reviewed, and arguably more so given the repeated large unplanned repair bills reported.

Where not to cut corners

  • Electrical wire sizing and fusing — undersized wire or missing fuses on a DC system is a fire risk that scales directly with the size of the battery bank now common in full-time builds; this is a place where the companion battery/electrical guide's sizing arithmetic should be followed exactly, not approximated.
  • Carbon monoxide and gas safety — any propane appliance or fuel-burning heater requires a functioning CO alarm and correct venting, covered in detail in the companion diesel heater and toilet guides; skipping a CO alarm to save $20–40 is the single worst place to economize in this entire build.
  • Tire age, not just tread depth — Michelin and Goodyear guidance both state tires should be evaluated on age as well as wear, with a generally accepted "time-out" factor of seven years regardless of remaining tread, and specific federal regulation requiring front-tire replacement at 4/32-inch tread on vehicles with a front axle rating over 10,000 lb, a threshold most full-size school buses meet. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall — the last three or four digits indicate week and year of manufacture — since a bus that has sat unused for years may have tires that look fine but are already past a safe service life.
  • Brakes — deferred brake work is directly implicated in the maintenance-cost overruns reported by multiple builders in this research and is not a line item to defer for cosmetic spending elsewhere.
  • Roof penetration sealing — covered in depth in the companion roof ventilation guide; this is confirmed there as the most common long-term leak source in a conversion, and the sealing method (butyl tape plus lap sealant, not silicone) matters more than the brand of vent or fan installed.
  • Rust remediation before building over it — building finished walls, insulation, or flooring over untreated rust hides a structural problem that becomes dramatically more expensive to fix later, and this research found no source suggesting this step can be safely skipped regardless of budget tier.
  • Mechanical diagnosis before major system installs — one builder's account of a $3,448 repair bill for what should have been a "$30 fix" illustrates that diagnostic difficulty, not parts cost, is often what turns a minor mechanical issue into a major expense, arguing for a thorough pre-purchase or early-build mechanical inspection rather than deferring diagnosis.
  • CO and smoke detection placement — this should be treated with the same rigor as the fire alarm code compliance work covered elsewhere on this site; a bus is a sealed metal box and combustion byproducts accumulate faster than in a typical stick-built home.
  • Registration and title reclassification paperwork — skipping proper title conversion to avoid fees can create larger legal and insurance problems later, and this varies by state in ways covered in the companion legal/regulatory sections of this site's other guides.

Three build profiles

Budget — roughly $10,000 to $25,000 all in, including the bus. Secondhand and salvaged where sensible. Strong DIY skills, constrained money. Carry a 20% contingency at this standard.

Mid-range — roughly $20,000 to $40,000 all in, including the bus. New mainstream materials, full kitchen and bathroom. Where most full-time builds land. Carry a 18% contingency at this standard.

Premium — roughly $40,000 to $60,000 all in, including the bus. Durable, serviceable components and a professional finish. Often includes a roof raise. Carry a 25% contingency at this standard.

These bands come from documented itemised builds rather than advertised figures, and they include the bus. Treat them as the shape of the thing, not a quote — the single biggest variable is not the standard you aim for but how much rework you do, and one documented build spent 79% of its materials budget again on mistakes.

Methodological Note on Cost Figures

Published skoolie build costs are widely inconsistent because sources rarely state what is included. A total of "$18,000" from one builder that excludes the bus, tools, and maintenance is not comparable to a "$36,000" total from another builder that includes all three — one build-community couple explicitly reported an $18,000 conversion cost that rose to roughly $36,000 once $14,000 in subsequent mechanical maintenance was added, a gap large enough to completely change how the build should be read. Every figure in this report states what it includes and excludes wherever the source specifies this; where a source does not specify, it is flagged explicitly as unspecified rather than presented as directly comparable to other figures.
