Who should choose Type C

Type C buses are the classic “dog-nose” school buses and remain the most common skoolie starting point. They are a strong fit if you:

  • Are budget-focused. Type Cs are often cheaper and more plentiful on the surplus market.
  • Want a more “truck-like” driving feel. The conventional hood and driver position feel familiar to many drivers.
  • Like the traditional school bus look. If you want your build to still “read” as a school bus, Type C is the iconic shape.
  • Value easier engine access. Tilting hoods make many routine maintenance tasks simpler than on some Type Ds.

Who should choose Type D

Type D buses are flat-nose, transit-style buses that maximize interior space. They are a strong fit if you:

  • Plan to live full-time. More interior length for the same exterior length means more room for beds, storage, and systems.
  • Want a more “RV-like” feel. The boxy, flat-front design feels more like a motorhome than a traditional school bus.
  • Are planning aggressive solar or roof decks. Flat, rectangular roofs are easier to pack with panels, vents, and roof decks.
  • Prioritize a quieter driver environment (rear-engine Type D). Rear-engine pushers move heat and noise away from the driver, though they lose the rear door.
